Der neue Film mit George Clooney und Kate Blanchet in den Hauptrollen, der im Berlin des Jahres 1945, unmittelbar vor Beginn der Potsdamer Konferenz spielt.

Keine Ahnung warum man sich bei Warner Bros. für diesen Filmtitel entschieden hat. Aus den Filmbeschreibungen die ich bisher gelesen habe und aus dem Trailer wird nicht ersichtlich warum es einen “good German” geben soll. Laut einer Forumsdiskussion bei der Internet Movie Database trifft folgende Wikipedia-Beschreibung wohl besonders auf die Buchvorlage von Joseph Kanon zu:
The film’s title alludes to the concept of “a good German”, ostensibly one who was not to blame for allowing Hitler to do the evil that he did, and who did not see the Holocaust as it occurred before their eyes. Thematically, the film centers on guilt, and the unanswered question: “Is it possible to both survive the atrocities and yet to be unaware of and uncomplicit in them?”
Ein anderer IMDb-Diskutant meint, das ganze sei nur ein Eye-Catcher:
“Good German” is something extraordinary that will immediately catch people’s attention and make them go ooh and aah and “a _GOOD_ german? How unconventional! I have to see this movie!”…
the title plays on contradiction / paradox like other movie titles such as “True Lies” and “Definitely, maybe.” etc. to draw attention.
Auch wenn mich der Filmtitel weitgehend ratlos zurück lässt und ich mich frage ob das ein weiterer Beitrag zur Entschuldung der Deutschen ist, – der passenderweise auf der Berlinale 2007 läuft – so stelle ich doch amüsiert fest dass die Deutschen zumindest in der englischprachigen Welt nicht einfach nur gutdeutsch sein können ohne dass es besonders betont werden müsste, sondern dass das Attribut ‘good’ bezugnehmend auf einen Deutschen eine mehr oder weniger widersprüchliche Aussage ist, die Aufmerksamkeit erzeugt. Ob der Film sehenswert ist sei aber dahingestellt. Nochmal ein anderer IMDb-User dazu:
TGG is boring with a captal b! Avoid it at all costs. Watch it… or try to. It’s so boring that most people will be turning it off and ejecting the dvd.
“The Good German” ist für einen Oscar und den Goldenen Bären nominiert.
